Hi “World fashion bloggers”, long time no see… I’ve moved from Shanghai (China) to Montréal (Canada) in October 2012 and in January 2013 I had my second baby, so let’s say that I was very busy the last few month and no time to write. So today I’m back for nice articles about Québec fashion news.

I live in the very French place of Montréal, “Le Plateau Mont-Royal” and I’m happy to discover many addresses of small designers shops and concept stores. The first gem I would like to talk about is Buk & Nola, a home décor and jewellery boutique, just right at the corner of my street (Rue Laurier/Rue Fabre). Located in an old apartment, it offers an eclectic selection from local and international designers since 2009. The two owners, Caroline Jodoin and Laurence Marinacci are also offering home décor consulting services for $60 per hour.

I like the great choice of colourful cushion from different brand, the pictures of old Canadian’s factories recoloured, and my favourite is all the old furniture for kids rewamped into one-of-a-kind from the brand “Un lapin dans le tiroir”.

They say fashion changes more than seasons do. Well, trends do, at least. There is this branch of fashion that seems to stick like an old bubblegum – bridal fashion.

Brides and prom queens, who are pretty much the mini, colourful versions of brides are a mistery of the clothing tree. As there have been less changes in the bridal industry as in the toast making world, wannabe corsets – I say wannabe, because they don’t enhance the hourglass, but hide it by being chunky like a robot’s suit, synthetic skirts and all-wrong silhouettes still are a rule for the most special day of a ladies life.

Not trying to generalize or write another miles long article – but have you noticed ladies, who normally are very well dressed or even are style stars go bananas on their wedding days? It’s like a bridal virus spreads when they go shopping for dresses. While their day-to-day style is so urban or even minimalistic and therefore only the extra added substance of white is expected, a cake situation happens. Who’s to blame?

A general family expectation? The industry (whatever than means)? The offer? Since I don’t believe in expectations, the market of wedding gowns just might cover the dilemma a bit. Oscar de la Renta, one of my favourite ones out there, are you to blame?

Who is Cartier?

Louis-François Cartier (1819-1904) is one of the oldest (1847) and most prestigious French jewellery and watch making design houses in the world. They are known for their intricately jewelled panther pieces that can be worn as a brooch, a ring, cuff, or earrings. Of course they make sought after watches like the Santos and of course their high jewellery watches which can sell for well over one million dollars. Needless to say they have many affluent clients including royalty and celebrities all over the world. Red Carpets are often spotted with Cartier diamonds and jewellery that are worth millions upon millions. Everyone wants a piece.

Cartier Introduces the Love Bracelet

New York – In 1970 when love it at its prime, Cartier launches the Love themed bracelets that come complete with screwdriver to fasten to a loved one only to be taken off by the one who fastened it. A binding type of love is sure to last. Either way the bangles made entirely of gold come spotted with diamonds, completely encrusted in diamonds, or simply make a statement in yellow, pink, or white gold (and start at around $5000.00).

The bracelet symbolizes more than love today, it symbolizes an iconic fashion accessory as notable as any Birkin bag and as hyped up as if you were seen at lunch with Angelina and Brad Pitt themselves. Taking a snapshot of a Love bracelet and sharing it over Instagram will undoubtedly get you hundreds of likes and a mountain of jealous comments in the tone of “I die!” and “Gimme!”

Cartier can be known for creating necklaces that are fit for the Queen herself but the Love bracelet is what everyone wants these days… Even me! Okay especially me!

Summer is around the corner and I can’t wait to trade my black blazer for a white one. Preferably oversized as seen at the Stella McCartney show. The white blazer gives an instant chic ‘parisienne’ look and the best of all: it’s so easy to combine! I’ve always been a big fan of a white blazer in combination with a black leather skinny a la Emmanuelle Alt. Or with casual jeans and a simple gray T-shirt … Love!

Fashion and Love are the main two things that take me to exciting places. Last week, Love brought me to Berlin, the German city full of creativity. My passion for Fashion took me to the most wonderful shops and stores in Berlin, among which the Atelier of the Grotesque. This atelier is the base of Dandy of the Grotesque, a brand that’s all about the Dandy Way of Life. Itamar Zechoval, the inspiring designer and owner of this brand, told me about his life and designs, and he taught me how to be a true Dandy! His work is so detailed and amazing, so I’ve set up this Q&A with Itamar to share some interesting facts on my new dandy friend. Be inspired!

How long have you been a designer?

I’ve been a designer for as long as I remember, but I’ve been working professionally since 1999.

You have lived in both Israel and Milan, but you’ve chosen Berlin as your new home. Why Berlin?

I was looking for a place that is in the process of reinventing itself rather than already established, and so along with the art scene, the creativity and the open minded mentality Berlin got my attention.

How does the city inspire you?

I’m always attracted to contradictions, and Berlin offers a lot of them. From the pre-war cabaret scene to the divided city until today’s Berlin that embodies a certain roughness with fine edges.

Your store truly offers a Dandy experience, I feel dandy just by setting foot in it! Have you released your inner decorator?

It was always there, and along with my wife, who is an interior designer, it manifested. It was very important for me that the atmosphere will complete the garments and the shopping experience.
We wanted to create something that is beyond a shop or a showroom, I describe the store as being the Home of the Dandy.

You seem to redefine the 21st century’s Dandy, how do you express this redefinition?

We aim to bring back the pleasure and tradition of custom-tailored garments but with a distinct and modern stylistic approach. The design’s starting point is the “classic”, but then it’s manipulated, stretching the boundaries of traditions and aesthetics.

There’s more to being a true Dandy than clothing, could you tell us about the Dandy way of life?

For me being a dandy is appreciating the small details that make everything around us worthwhile. It’s about not losing your curiosity and to strive to perfection in everything you do.

Your studio is called The Atelier of the Grotesque, and you often work here on collaborations with external projects. What is your favorite collaboration so far?

There are many, I love working with other creatives that bring more to my work and inspire me to push forward my creativity. Last year, we collaborated with Bela-B, the drummer of the well known German rock band ‘Die Ärzte’. I had complete creative freedom and I was very happy with the result and the great reactions I received.

You launched two collections a year; could you already tell us which trendlines you will capture next season?

For the next season we are working on new silhouettes for the men’s classic jacket and the thread that connects traditional tailoring and the modern gentleman. Spice all that with a rock-n’-roll attitude and a bit of decadence, and there you go.

You’ve designed outfits for Marilyn Manson, for example. Which celebrity would you love to dress one day?

I would love to design costumes for David Bowie … Now that he is launching a new album I might have a chance.

What are your plans for the future?

Dandy of the Grotesque is now a young label and creative studio. Along with continuing developing our collection, I’m hoping to create more costumes for film and theatre.

I first discovered accessories designer Taeseok Kang last September when I saw his creations displayed at the Vauxhall Fashion Scout designer exhibition, where I was fortunate enough to meet him in person. Everything about the London College of Fashion graduate is innovative. From his use of unusual materials in his products, right down to his business cards, that novelly fuse functionality with a freebie button hole badge for the receiver in the form of the signature nipple seen in his designs. He described his handbag collection entitled Sexual Humorous as exploring ‘narratives of sexual human body and addresses the question of palpable sensations that manifest from the sexual instinct of a human being and the range of sexiness from subtle to extreme’. Though it is not this subtle incorporation of nudity in his handbags that has taken the fashion crowd by storm, but rather his use of real human hair in his pieces. Plaited shoulder straps, tassels and decorative panels, have all been produced using the abnormal material, Kang even going as far as simulating a head of long flowing locks in one of his bags. Many have described his work as being macabre and frowned upon the use of real human hair, I can see how the notion of using a material derived from a human being does evoke feeling of being somewhat below the belt. After all it’s one thing wearing cow hide on your pair of ponyskin boots, an animal eaten on a daily basis and quite the other owning a fragment of some unknown individual. It creates a clever spin on societies production of fashion, just like the use of human teeth by jewellery designers like Charlotte Burkhart. Personally I find the idea witty and whilst I think it would take me a little time to get my head around the idea, I wouldn’t be put off owning and wearing a human hair creation – I do in fact absolutely adore his plaited shoulder strap box bag with stud detail.
